Hitting a High Note: Celebrating a New Chapter and NCCU

Musical Empowerment’s Kick-Off Party celebrated the newest chapter at North Carolina Central University. The dynamic evening was a true celebration of community. Those in attendance included NCCU students, RN Harris students and families, and community supporters. The kick-off was held at ReCity Network, a non-profit social impact hub in Durham. Musical selections from Robert Trowers and NCCU jazz students created an inspirational ambience for bright-eyed elementary school-aged musicians. There was engaging conversation over dinner served by the Chicken Hut, a historic Durham restaurant, and attendees were able to explore and learn about Musical Empowerment and our community partners.

As Musical Empowerment continues to grow, so does our scope. North Carolina Central University, the first Musical Empowerment HBCU chapter, is growing in partnership with BUMP the Triangle. BUMP is a non-profit organization empowers youth through music of the African Diaspora, together building a tool-kit of music, culture and resilience in culturally responsive community. This, coupled with the strong musical history of Central as an institution, are positioned to create culturally-affirming environment for students. Students from R.N. Harris Elementary school, with the support of Principal Brown, will not only receive 1-on-1 lessons but also be exposed to rich musical history across genres and communities. The evening was a celebration of new beginnings, community, and a shared love of music.
