LOOK, LOOK, Up in the sky! It’s a bird, it’s a plane. NO it’s Super Katie, Musical Empowerment’s new Program Director whose exuberant energy, creative ideas and passionate commitment to music and kids keep her on the go and flying high much of the time.
A Summa Cum Laude graduate of Susquehanna University in Pennsylvania, Katie joined ME’s team in July after 10 years as a music educator in public schools in Oregon and North Carolina. The children she served came from a variety of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds ranging in age from kindergarteners to seniors in high school.
One of six children, Katie’s own musical interests developed during her childhood with the encouragement of her family. She plays at least four instruments: the French horn, trumpet, violin and bass. Little surprise then that she chose music for her career.
As a teacher, Katie has long recognized the positive impact that a supportive and caring relationship will have on a child’s development. It is Musical Empowerment’s focus on mentorship that first drew Katie to the organization. As she notes “This job allows me to live out all of my values. I am tremendously excited to be here.”
